Activate Accelerate Session 7

This session, we discussed the importance of your mental state when setting goals. We were given an article to review about the psychology behind those who achieve goals compared to those who don’t. One of the interesting things we learned is that there seem to be two different modes people can be in at a time, “goal mode” and “normal mode”.

“Goal mode” is when you’re hyped up about completing a goal, and you are doing everything you can to achieve it. “Normal mode” is when the goal is achieved or when you don’t have a goal to go for. You stay in your regular habits and keep doing the things you normally do. This is an important distinction to notice, because this is the main reason why most people fail at maintaining their goals. When trying to achieve a goal or maintain a new habit, you need to turn “goal mode” into “normal mode”, because achieving that goal should change your normal ways for the better.

Another interesting takeaway we talked about in session was how you aren’t able to achieve your goal because you aren’t the person who would achieve that goal in the first place. What they mean by that is, you're changing everything temporarily by going into “goal mode” in order to achieve that goal, but you aren’t changing you or your ways. Part of achieving a goal or building a habit is to change yourself, little by little, until you are the person who can achieve that goal (which would be when you achieve it, because that’s what all the work built up to).

Lastly, we did a little housekeeping about Accelerate schedules. Part of this conversation about the mindsets behind goal setting also had to do with our schedules and weekly trackers. By discussing and having a better understanding of the psychology of goal setting, we also have a better understanding of how to achieve goals and set them more effectively in Accelerate.

That was it for this session. I really enjoyed the discussions about the psychology of goal setting because I felt like it was more real-world applicable and could be used in my daily life as I go about setting and achieving my own goals.
